To keep your food surrounded in ice and extend the time it spends below the FDA's recommended temperature of 40 degrees Fahrenheit for safe food storage, it's essential to layer your cooler correctly. Always top the contents with a layer of ice for best results.

Using plenty of ice is crucial, as coolers maintain the average temperature of the items inside. More ice means colder temperatures and longer-lasting ice. Additionally, it's important to keep the lid closed to keep the cold air in and the hot air out.

Before placing the food and drinks in the cooler, be sure to pre-chill them. The colder the contents, the longer they will last. Lastly, keep the cooler in the shade, as direct sunlight and extreme heat will cause it to heat up faster.

When it comes to the most effective ice layouts, layer from bottom to top: Food-Ice-Food-Ice. Always make ice your top layer. Freeze or pre-chill all food before placing it in the cooler, and surround and top the contents with ice.
